Fakoly started his music career at the age of 18. He is the founder of Djelys. He played his first concert in 1993. Concerned by his country’s social and political evolution, Tiken Jah soon began publishing insightful works on the political environment in Côte d’Ivoire. One such piece was on the death of Félix Houphouet-Boigny in 1993, which resulted in a spike in popularity among the nation’s youth. Fakoly made his international debut in Paris in 1998.
Fakoly has lived in exile in Bamako, Mali, since 2003, due to the growth in political instability and xenophobia in Côte d’Ivoire, as well as death threats for his songs. In December 2007, he was declared persona non grata in Senegal for publicly criticizing President Abdoulaye Wade.

Tiken Jah created the campaign “Un concert une école” (One Concert, One School) in 2009. Through the movement and collaboration with institutions and organizations. He funded the construction of a school in Touroni, Mali, and a college in Dianké, Mali.
