Ryan Coogler is an award-winning African-American director, screenwriter, and producer. He is notable for directing Black Panther and Wakanda Forever. He has four NAACP Image Awards and four Black Reel Awards. As well as a Nomination for Best Picture for the Academy Award. He usually casts Michael B. Jordan in his works. He directed the Creed sequels, Judas and the Black Messiah, and Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Ryan Coogler Biography

Coogler grew up in Oakland until he was eight years old when his family relocated to Richmond, California. He used to run track and play football in his youth. He attended Saint Mary’s College High School in Berkeley, California, a private Catholic high school, and excelled in math and science.

Ryan received a football scholarship with the goal of studying chemistry at St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga, California. Football players enrolled in a creative writing class. Coogler’s teacher praised his work and encouraged him to study scriptwriting.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in finance while simultaneously enrolling in as many film courses as he could squeeze in around the demands of college football. After graduating, he got into a three-year master’s program at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he created a series of short films.

Coogler was born in Oakland, California, on May 23, 1986 (Age 37). He was born to his mother, Joselyn Coogler, a community organizer, and his father, Ira Coogler, a juvenile hall probation counselor. His parents are graduates of California State University in Hayward. Noah and Keenan are his two brothers. Clarence Thomas, a third-generation Oakland longshoreman and former secretary-treasurer of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, is his uncle.

  • Fruitvale Station (formerly titled Fruitvale) was Ryan Coogler’s debut feature-length film, released in 2013, and featured the tale of Oscar Grant (played by Michael B. Jordan), who was shot to death by a police officer at Oakland’s Fruitvale BART station on January 1, 2009. Forest Whitaker, the Oscar-winning actor, produced the film.
  • In Creed, his second film released in 2015, Ryan co-wrote and directed with Aaron Covington. Apollo, played by Michael B. Jordan in the film, is mentored by his father’s old friend and former competitor, Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone. 
  • Black Panther: Coogler became the first black Marvel Studios director when he co-wrote and directed the 2018 film, Black Panther. The film features Chadwick Boseman as the lead character, who is named king of Wakanda after his father’s death but is challenged by his cousin, Erik Killmonger (played by Michael B. Jordan), who intends to abandon the country’s isolationist beliefs and launch a global revolution. The film grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, breaking multiple box office records upon its release and becoming the highest-grossing movie directed by a black director, the ninth-highest-grossing film of all time, and the second-highest-grossing film of 2018.
  • Judas and the Black Messiah: In 2021, Coogler worked as a co-producer on the Fred Hampton film Judas and the Black Messiah, directed by Shaka King, about the betrayal of Hampton (played by Daniel Kaluuya), chairman of the Illinois branch of the Black Panther Party in late-1960s Chicago, by William O’Neal (played by LaKeith Stanfield).
